                      RAIDDOS.TXT --- INTRODUCTION
======================================================================

Congratulations on purchasing your new Adaptec PCI RAID Adapter.
This board provides RAID solutions with an unprecedented
price/performance ratio. The AAA-131 is one SCSI channel PCI RAID
Adapter. The AAA-132 is two SCSI channels PCI RAID Adapter. AAA-133
is three SCSI channels PCI RAID Adapter.

                     DOS Drivers for CD-ROM access
======================================================================

CD-ROM drivers only need to be installed if DOS access to a CD-ROM
drive attached to the ARO-1130 or AAA-131 or AAA-132 or AAA-133 is
required. If NetWare is already installed, or if the CD-ROM drive is
not connected to the ARO-1130 or AAA-131 or AAA-132 or AAA-133
these drivers do not need to be copied or installed.

This disk provides the following DOS drivers:

1. ASPI8DOS.SYS version 1.27

DOS ASPI driver for ARO-1130, AAA-131, AAA-131, AAA-133. Only needed
if ASPICD.SYS will be loaded.

2. ASPICD.SYS

DOS ASPI driver for CD ROM devices. Not needed if CD-ROM access is
only required from NetWare.

Following systems files should be modified as discussed:

1. CONFIG.SYS

Modify CONFIG.SYS for loading ASPI8DOS.SYS and ASPICD.SYS, necessary
for connecting a CD-ROM. Either create this file in C:\ if you do not
currently have a CONFIG.SYS, or add these lines to the existing
CONFIG.SYS. Note that you may need to change the path for the
drivers.

          DEVICE=C:\SCSI\ASPI8DOS.SYS /D
          DEVICE=C:\SCSI\ASPICD.SYS /D:ASPICD0

2. AUTOEXEC.BAT

Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT for loading MSCDEX, which is necessary for
connecting a CD-ROM. Add this line to the existing AUTOEXEC.BAT:

          MSCDEX.EXE /D:ASPICD0 /M:12

This will assign the CD-ROM to the next available driver letter,
typically D: if there is only one DOS drive.

If you are using MS-DOS V5 and do not already have MSCDEX, you will
need to either upgrade to V6.0 or above, or download MSCDEX from
Microsoft BBS or CompuServe forum.

                      DOS Access to Array Devices
======================================================================

Although the ARO-1130 or AAA-131, AAA-132, AAA-133 BIOS provides
INT 13 BIOS access to array devices, including fault-tolerant access
even with a down drive, none of the hot spare or reconstruct options
are available from DOS. BIOS access is intended as a means of booting
NetWare.

During DOS access, if enough drives fail to take an array off-line
(more than one drive of a RAID5 array, or any drive of a RAID0 array,)
DOS will give the standard "General failure reading drive" error
message. No message is given for a single drive failure in a RAID5
array.

Once NetWare is loaded, CI/O Array Management Software will report
any error conditions. If a hot spare is available, it will
automatically be invoked.

Because of the above issues, using the ARO-1130 or AAA-131, AAA-132,
AAA-133 in a DOS or Windows environment is not recommended.
